Usury – Destructive Consequences

In the name of Allaah, Most Beneficent and Most Merciful

Allah has prescribed many do’s and don’ts in the Quran. The do’s that Allah has ordered us to do are to elevate us, give us honor and to make us lead a pure and pristine life. The Don’ts that Allah has ordered us are to save us from calamities, disasters, trials and tribulations in this life. Allah is Al-A’leem (All Knowing) and Al-Hakeem (All Wise). Allah knows us better than we know ourselves. Allah out of mercy has given us this beautiful deen of Islam knowing exactly what is beneficial for us. When we leave the way set by Allah and lead our life according to our desires, disasters are bound to happen.

Allah encourages love, affection and cooperation among humans by explicity forbidding oppression, exploitation and enmity among them. Allah has commanded against financial exploitation of poor by the rich and has made usury or interest forbidden. This will help both the rich and the poor. Rich will not suck the blood of the poor by making money out of money by just lending it out and the poor also will not go beyond their means to realize their dreams. Usury will make the poor to work like slaves. Usury will lead to inflation in the prices which will make poor poorer. The difference between the rich and the poor keeps increasing with the entire wealth getting concentrated in the hands of few individuals and rest working like slaves. If usury is prohibited, then the rich will invest their money to create jobs and help the needy by charity or a interest free loan. The poor will also learn to not go beyond their means in acheiving their dreams. Rich will help the poor financially and the poor will help the rich with their services. This will create a society free of oppression and exploitation.
